Calif., – May 26, 2010–BEI Kimco Magnetics, a company of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST), Inc., recently met the challenging high-performance motor requirements for a new, all-electric actuator targeting power generation control applications for gas turbine engines.
 The Kimco motor development supported the customer’s goal to replace aging and more costly pneumatic and hydraulic technologies with improved all-electric designs. In this instance, the product would provide an alternative for fuel metering, guide vane, and precision valve control for industrial, marine, and military applications.
Key to the actuator design was a highly reliable, compact BLDC motor capable of supporting axially translated loads of 1,000 lbs. on a continuous basis. The motor would be required to drive the axial load at velocities of 10.0 inches per second with positioning accuracies of better than +/- 1.0%. Another important requirement was reliable operational performance at ambient temperatures of up to 125 degrees C.
To meet these stringent requirements, BEI Kimco developed a Frameless High Torque Density Motor (Model DIP43-32-HPZA) measuring only 4.3” in diameter x 3.2” in axial length. This rotor/stator part set, or “frameless” configuration, allows the motor rotor to be directly coupled to the load, resulting in improved operating efficiencies, reduced parts count and an extremely small package size that met the customer size constraints. Select, high energy product rare earth magnets were utilized to achieve exceptional torque stability at the operating temperature extremes. Thermal sensors embedded in the motor windings supply temperature data to the customer’s external fault/health monitoring system, and a stainless steel sleeve encases the permanent magnets for added structural support and security.
“When you consider the envelope constraints, it’s really amazing that the motor is able to develop enough linear force to drive loads approaching 1000 lbs.,” says Walter Smith, BEI Kimco’s Senior Applications Engineer/Project Manager for Motors. “Just visualize an actuator that is capable of lifting three full-grown people and you have a clear picture of its capabilities. - that’s an extremely high torque density for such a small package.”
