BEI Kimco Magnetics has been chosen as the sole source supplier for the torque motors that will be used on the latest state-of-the-art Commander Pan Viewer battlefield imaging platform. This system will be supplied to a military vendor for use on the mobile gun system that is currently being built into a military vehicle platform, a 19-ton wheeled armored vehicle that provides the Army with a family of ten different vehicles. BEI Kimco Magnetics was chosen for its advanced, finite-element analysis modeling capabilities, which will assist in minimizing system errors due to magnetic friction and cogging. Two motors will be supplied, the 9" dia. asmyth and a 3" dia. elevation motor will support a servo system that acquires and stabilizes the image during high speed operation.
BEI Kimco Magnetics was a pioneer in the development of direct-drive,
or "frameless", torque motors (Torquers). These compact, high performance motor part-sets use high slot-to-pole ratios, distributed winding techniques, and high slot fill to couple the motor's rotor directly to the load, without the need for gearing. This approach eliminates errors due to mechanical friction/backlash and is ideally suited for applications where rapid starts/stops, high acceleration and low speed precision motion are required. The brushless versions of this technology are being used in a variety of smart weapons platforms, battlefield management systems and medical applications.
